I began by journey with ACS as a student member at CSU Sacramento. Even then, ACS provided great opportunities to present at conferences and attend speaker events, and also gave a glimpse into the power of networking for my future career. As a newly-minted chemistry graduate, I began my teaching career as an adjunct at several different schools. ACS was still there for me, as I was sponsored to present a talk on Green Chemistry at Sacramento City College. My first full-time job took me out of California, where I had lived for all my adult life, and into Washington State… and ACS was still there! With a tenure-track job in Centralia, Washington, I sought out the local section (Puget Sound Section) and met some local colleagues. Through the local section I have been able to be involved with Chemists Celebrate Earth Day, the Undergraduate Research Symposium, our yearly Career Day, and a lot of fun social events. I am also excited to be attending and presenting at the 20th annual Green Chemistry and Engineering Conference this year. Oh, and I am also now a tenured professor and the Chair-Elect of the Puget Sound Section! Wherever you currently find yourself on your chemistry pathway, the ACS has something to offer you.

To me getting to come to an ACS national meeting is getting to work on my skill at presenting for my future.

Most of my classes are majority male, so it has been nice to meet a lot of women chemists here at the conference. It has been nice to talk with them and relate more with them than my usual classmates.

My ACS membership experience is defined by the student’s affiliates chapter at my college. It is defined by my connection with peers and professionals in the field of chemistry. It is defined by my shared passion for chemistry with thousands of other members. Most of all it is defined by the opportunities being a member provides to me, including being able to attend a national ACS meeting where I was given access to a plethora of knowledge and had the opportunity to meet Professor Molenium!

I value the immense opportunities for professional development and networking at the ACS National Meetings. It is the one place you can meet people from all parts of the discipline and yet we share the same bond of chemistry together.
